Triple treat! Trio of twins will keep kindy teachers busy

A triple-double may be great in basketball, and even better when ordering ice cream.

But for the kindergarten teachers at one school on the Central Coast, these three pairs of twins promise to be quite a handful.

Against the odds, these delightful sets of siblings all started their school journey yesterday at Munmorah Public School.

Across the state, tears and tissues were the order of the day, as thousands of new kindergarten children began their first day of school in the public school system.

Rosie and Zac Perry, Izzabelle and Jessie Boe-Lewis and Jariah and Harper Rosit all took the big first day in their stride, with principal Graham Holmes saying it was a "pretty special day" for the kids, parents and teachers alike.

"The staff's reaction has been interesting, which tells me that something like this doesn't happen too often," he said.

"It's certainly unusual and there are plenty of people around today who are both excited and proud."

New figures released yesterday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show parents voting with their feet for public schools, with the proportion of children enrolled in government schools on the increase in 2016.

ABS spokeswoman Michelle Marquardt said government schools now educated 65.4 per cent of all schoolchildren - about 2.4 million students in all.

"These new figures see the reversal of the steady drift of students from government to non-government schools over much of the past 40 years," she said.
