COMMENT: TRL club needs our support after a whitewash
SEEMS like the Oakey Bears club needs help to continue a proud rugby league tradition after going down 82-1 to Wattles in 44 minutes of rugby league at Platz Oval on Sunday.
Been there, done that, would be the reaction of officials from many country clubs to the scoreline.
Player, sponsor and supporter support for rugby league teams comes and goes and very few clubs could rightly claim they haven't had a day like Oakey experienced on Sunday at Clifton.
The Oakey field goal in amongst a thrashing was one bright light for the proud Bears.
Wattles might have won the game but the real winners were the nine Oakey players who returned to the field in the second half, some backing up after playing earlier in the day. The game on Sunday has not been the only thumping for Oakey this season.
After Warwick went down in the A-grade grand final to Oakey in 1999, the Cowboys had a rough time and the real winners were the players who stuck in there to fly the flag.
The question begs - what can rugby league officials at higher levels do to help Oakey?
Too much volunteer work has been put into the Bears for the club not to come out the other side after a tough season.
The Teevan brothers, Craig and Rohan, are just two from Oakey to go on to NRL level.
