TRL condemns 'ugly racist bile'
RUGBY LEAGUE: The TRL has taken to social media to vent their frustration at the alleged scene that took place on Friday night.
A statement posted on the TRL Facebook page to its 9000-plus followers read:
"Just when we thought that we had reached a more enlightened age in the twenty-first century, the ugly face of racism has shown itself at a Toowoomba Rugby League fixture where an individual hiding in the anonymous crowd chose to shout racist comments to players on the field.
"Our players, no matter their ethnic or cultural background, deserve better than this when they put their bodies on the line for their clubs, their team mates and their supporters.
"Anyone who attends games and yells their ugly racist bile, fuelled no doubt by the false courage found in a can of beer, deserves our contempt and our censure. There is no place for such behaviour and there is no place for the cowards who are responsible for this behaviour. All decent human beings condemn your actions.
"Everyone is invited to our games to enjoy the competition and the skill and athleticism of our players. However those who cannot act with manners and a sense of decency are not welcome and should find another outlet for their hatefulness and their disgraceful behaviour.”
THE PUBLIC'S RESPONSE
"Public who come to a game of rugby league have no right to play a race card or any type of abuse to any player doing his best in front of his parents, wife, his children or supporters.” Greg O'Reilly
"Good on you TRL. As an Aboriginal woman I thank you for taking a stand. Over the weekend my husband, whose also Aboriginal, played for Dalby, as did many of my Aboriginal friends and family. #NoRoomForRacism. Thank you again” Jules Duncan
"Well said TRL there is never ever any room for racism in sports or anywhere for that matter. All cultures play in all sports and especially lots of kids so it's very sad and disrespectful when this happens.” Mitzi Dennison
"Well said I hope you find the mouth piece and his cowardly mates and deal with them all appropriately. I bet if whoever it was didn't have the mates around and had alcohol to make him seem 10ft tall and bulletproof he probably wouldn't have said anything and if someone else had of chipped him over it they would have been in the wrong and he would've been spoiling for a fight.” Karmilla Saunders
