TRL considers return of women's league
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Toowoomba Rugby League is ready to reconsider a women's rugby league competition in 2017.
Last year, the TRL rolled out a league-tag version of the game but this year things were not quite as successful.
Its similarity to other codes of the game have been cited as a stumbling block for the TRL to commit to the proposal again but things could be different in 2017.
"It is tough there (the city) because touch is so strong and rugby sevens has taken off too,” TRL treasurer Tony Coonan said.
"The girls are saying they just want to play and would be prepared to play tackle because otherwise it is just too similar to touch,”
A lot of the country-based teams are jumping at the opportunity but numbers aren't quite there for clubs in the city yet.
"We would love to keep on growing the ladies' game,” Coonan said.
"It didn't really get off the ground this year but we would like to get it going.”
In 2015, Warwick fielded a leaguetag team which narrowly missed out on playing in the grand final.
Leaguetag has been a great success in the Border Rugby League with Tenterfield unbeaten in three seasons.
Killarney fielded a leaguetag team for one season in the BRL.
The proposal to play women's rugby league is once again on the agenda for the TRL AGM tomorrow.
