Troop numbers to double at military base near Springfield

THE Ipswich region is set to be home to even more military personnel with a base outside Springfield set to more than double.

The recently redeveloped Greenbank Military Area, outside Springfield, is set to see its more than 100 troops grow to about 250.

The base is currently home to the 25th/49th Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment (25/49 RQR) which was moved from the Army's Enoggera Barracks after the Greenbank site went through a major development.

New headquarters and work facilities were opened on the site late last year.

A defence representative said 25/49 RQR, and 11 Engineer Regiment that also operate out of Greenbank, are set to more than double in size.

"The 25th/49th Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment, has recently relocated from Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, to the Greenbank Military Area, west of Brisbane," the representative said.

"More than 100 Regular Army and Army Reservists are posted to 25/49 RQR at Greenbank, with plans to expand the current numbers to around 250, including personnel who will be posted to 11 Engineer Regiment which is also on the site."

Despite moving troops away from the massive Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera, the representative said the army had no plans to reduce its reliance on the base.

"There are no current plans to close Gallipoli Barracks, which is the biggest army base in south-east Queensland, home to about 16 full-time units and 5000 personnel," the representative said.

The doubling of personnel at the Greenbank Military Area follows the expansion of RAAF Base Amberley into one of the country's biggest and most important air bases.

Amberley is home to more than 5000 employees, and plans previously have been announced to develop a major aerospace centre at Amberley.
