Truck driver arrested over cyclist’s death
POLICE have charged a 43-year-old Kingsthorpe truck driver over the hit-and-run death of Lowood veterinarian Dr Martin Pearson.
Warwick Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Darren Tamblyn said the man was charged yesterday afternoon with dangerous driving causing death, showing callous disregard.
Detectives arrested the man at his Kingsthorpe home yesterday.
They will allege he was driving a road train which collided with Dr Pearson on the Millmerran Inglewood Rd while he was competing in a cycling race on the afternoon of April 25.
"Obviously a large number of inquiries have been made over the last 10 to 12 weeks, including forensic evidence, witness statements and a lot of inquiries with the Main Roads Department," Det Sgt Tamblyn said.
He said the man's truck was seized on June 12 for forensic investigation.
The man's home was also searched and items including log books, mobile phones and paperwork were seized the same day.
Det Sgt Tamblyn said extensive police work had led to the arrest.
"Basically, there was certain evidence left at the scene which included a spotlight, but other than that there wasn't a real lot of evidence to start the investigation."
The man is due to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court today.
