Truck yeah! Wickhams opens doors for a good cause
WHAT began with brothers Peter and Angus Wickham transporting potatoes from their Killarney property to the Brisbane Markets will this weekend celebrate two milestones by opening their doors to the public.
Wickham Freight Lines will celebrate 25 years since it joined forces with other family-owned transport companies to form Combined Distribution Management and 20 years since the opening of the Warwick terminal.
With its head office in Warwick Wickham Freight Lines now transports refrigerated and general freight daily with terminals in Sydney, Melbourne and Bundaberg.
Family member and human resources supervisor Thomasin Keogh said the company now employed about 400 people including about 180 drivers.
At the Warwick depot its workshop and service centre maintain the trucks while the bulk of employees are on the road, trucking around the country.
This Saturday members of the public will have the chance to see what happens behind the scenes of the freight company and have a great day out. Bring the kids along to let them get up close and even sit in some of our oldest, newest and biggest trucks.
There will be giveaways, face painting, free carnival rides, demonstrations, depot tours and information sessions.
The day will also be used to raise awareness and money for the charity Beyond Blue to help people with mental health issues.
Ms Keogh said with a business employing a majority of men who regularly spend hours on the road on their own, their mental health was a concern for the industry.
“Men don’t talk about their problems,” she said.
“They do some big drives. They’re out on their own in the middle of nowhere without their families.”
She said audio books, the radio, phones and tablets and being able to chat to each other on UHF radio made the drives less isolated, and some blokes loved being on the road.
To raise money to support this cause, they will be selling limited edition Wickham’s merchandise and Kenworth products.
The open day will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in the transport industry to see how it’s all done and to have a chat with those working in it. There will also be a careers tent for people to find out what’s involved in working at Wickhams.
Come along on October 12 from 10am to 2pm at Wickham Freight Lines, 494 East Street, Warwick.
