Twenty new nurses for Darling Downs

THE new Labor Government has promised 400 extra nurses for Queensland and the Darling Downs region will receive 20.

Under Labor's Nursing Guarantee Policy, the extra nurses will improve patient safety and restore services which the previous LNP government cut.

A spokesman for Health Minister Cameron Dick said 20 extra nursing positions would open up in the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service area, which includes Toowoomba and Warwick.

The Ipswich area will also get 20 extra nurses while Brisbane city will receive about 150.

The spokesman said the extra nurses would be based where patients' needs were greatest and where services were hardest hit by the previous cuts.

Earlier this week Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Mr Dick also announced they would honour their election commitment of employing 4000 graduate nurses for over four years.

The graduates would be guaranteed a job for at least a year.

Ms Palaszczuk said their election commitments were about creating a better health system and getting nursing graduates jobs.

"We want to make sure that during the next round of graduates we have our policies in place to make sure these graduates get the jobs they need," she said.

It is expected the nursing graduate policy will cost an extra $111 million, including employing 1000 nursing graduates every year over four years.

It also will include funding 16 nurse educators.

The 400 extra nursing positions coupled with other programs is estimated to cost about $110 million.

Ms Palaszczuk has also promised to legislate a nurse-to-patient ratio in the coming months.
