Two junior victories good news for Cunningham club future

POLOCROSSE: Host club Cunningham won both junior divisions at the multi-horse carnival at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve at the weekend.

Cunningham 1 won the junior A final from Warwick and in B grade, Cunningham 2 won from runners up Taroom. Tansey player Dan Hafey was judged best junior of the tournament.

Cunningham secretary Robyn Cooper said it had been two years since the club had won both A and B grade juniors at the one carnival.

“Our juniors are doing really well, Lauren Sillitoe has been coaching the Cunningham 1 team and Melissa Kerr is coaching the Cunningham 2 team,” Cooper said.

“Blake Felton was in our Cunningham 1 team and playing in his first carnival while Ash Sticklen is only in her second season.

“Two players in the Cunningham 2 team played in their first carnival and were really happy to win. Four of the players in our second team are 12 years or under.”

In the A-grade open competition, Tansey 1 won from Warwick 1.

Tansey player Andrew Phillips won the award for best male player of the carnival.

Sydnee Johnson from Tansey was best female player and Cunningham star Zac O’Leary the best intermediate.

Cunningham was runners up in D and G grades in the open.

Warwick was runners up in A-grade open and A-grade juniors and filled the top two placings in E grade. Warwick 5 was first in E grade and Warwick 3 runners up.

This week, many of the players from Cunningham and Warwick clubs heading to the April 18-24 nationals will be preparing to leave for Albury. Cunningham players will leave as early as Thursday although some won’t head south to the middle of next week.
