Two men nabbed after school attack
POLICE have charged two men over the bashing of Stanthorpe State School cleaner Rodney Steele.
Stanthorpe police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said two females involved in last Friday morning's incident approached police on Tuesday after the attack was covered in the media.
Mr Steele suffered a broken jaw and was covered in bruises after he was bashed in the school grounds about 3.30am.
"As a result of the information received, along with other information gleaned during the thorough police investigation into the matter, the two male offenders have now been located and arrested on charges of assault occasioning bodily harm whilst in company, wilful destruction of property and trespass," Snr Sgt Ireland said.
While Mr Steele said he would recover from the physical trauma, he was left emotionally scarred by the incident.
"I'm a bit scared, but I'll get over it," he said.
Mr Steele's wife Francis said her husband had been doing it tough over the past few days and that she was worried about the physical and mental toll the attack would take.
Stanthorpe Police officer-in-charge Mark Ireland condemned the unprovoked attack.
"It is always disturbing when something like this happens. It doesn't matter where it is," Snr Sgt Ireland said.
The men, aged 19 and 20, were released on strict bail conditions to appear in Stanthorpe Magistrates Court on Wednesday next week.
Snr Sgt Ireland thanked local media for their support and playing a role in helping promote the incident for witnesses to come forward.
"I'd also like to thank the officers who conducted a timely and thorough investigation into this matter."
