Two overseas batsmen join Warwick cricket club
cricket: Two gap students from Scots PGC College will boost the chances of the Warwick Hotel Colts team in the Condamine Cup competition.
There are four gap students from South Africa at the college this year with the two men ready to play cricket and rugby.
All four help out with sports coaching and in the boarding houses at the college.
Scott Stretton and Jeremy Beyleveld, from Eastern Cape, already played in the Australia Day Cricket Carnival with the Scots PGC Past Students' team.
Beyleveld hit 103 off 46 balls and 102 in another game to be one of the best batsmen at the carnival.
"My highest score is 144 in South Africa,” he said.
Stretton rates his main sports as cricket and rugby "but I like all sports”.
He has a best score of 86 in cricket and is aiming to score the first century of his career while in Warwick.
Beyleveld and Stretton have both joined Colts and will play cricket against Victoria Hill XI today at Allora.
The two will also play rugby: Beyleveld is a blindside flanker and Stretton prefers open side flanker but they may be used in different positions by the Water Rats.
Female gap students
The two other gap students are also interested in sport - Sophie Butler plays hockey and Aly Ferreira netball.
Butler hails from Somerset West and Ferreira is also from Eastern Cape.
A hockey striker, Butler has represented the Boland region in South Africa and has a top of six goals in a game.
"My parents are originally from England so I may even try to play at higher levels in hockey in England,” she said.
Ferreira is keen to play in Warwick Netball Association fixtures on a Monday or Tuesday nights at WIRAC.
"I played wing attack or wing defence in South Africa,” she said.
Condamine Cup
In Condamine Sports Club cricket, the top four teams will play off for the A-grade grand final and the next three will play off for the reserve-grade trophy on March 16.
