Two top reasons to leave beautiful Gladstone Marina

GLADSTONE Marina is beautiful, but if you're looking for somewhere different to drop anchor, here are a couple of options for a new adventure. Watch out for dugongs!

1 Graham's Creek at The Narrows

Why it's great: If you are a keen mariner, chances are you will already frequent Graham's Crossing, a wilderness encased in The Narrows, where crab potting, fishing and sheltered anchorage combine into one isolated haven. Graham's Creek is fairly deep, with a sheltered anchorage at all times.

How to get there: From boat ramps at The Narrows, following The Narrows Rd; otherwise by navigation through Port Curtis or from the north at the Fitzroy Delta.

Tips: Watch tides carefully. If you are in the depths, you should have no troubles. However, there are several shallow sand and rock bars in hiding. Don't proceed into any of the smaller channels during a low tide.

Also, prepare for a lot of relentless sandflies.

2 Rodds Harbour at Turkey Beach

Why it's great: Rodds Harbour is everything you have dreamed of when taking time out on the boat.

How to get there: Approximately 50km south-east of Gladstone.

Tips: The area is a dugong sanctuary, and every effort must be taken to look after the wildlife and their habitats. If you are venturing to Rodds Harbour, take the tackle box. It is an angler's version of paradise.
