Tyre shop is set to wheel in changes for new financial year

THE new financial year heralds change at local family business Scotney's Tyres with a couple of familiar faces back at the helm.

Roger Scotney's retirement was short-lived, just three months, but he's back to help new owner, daughter Kylie reposition Scotney's Tyres as the trusted family tyre business it developed into over 32 years.

Brother-in-law Phillip Vellacott will also throw on the steel capped boots armed with years of experience as a tyre fitter and lengthy motor services industry experience. For many years, Phillip was the friendly face behind the counter or on the phone in his roles as service advisor and Parts Manager for local Toyota dealerships Rickard Motors and Black Toyota.

Kylie's focus is on making positive changes within the business, while still providing the welcoming service that the business is renowned for.

"Just like every member of the family, I've spent time working in the business and I know that it is built on personal service and going the extra mile," she said.

"It will be great to have dad and Phillip by my side to share their experience and help me learn the business in more depth, but in saying that, I think I'm doing pretty well on the battery and tyre sizes, for a girl!"

Always the adventurer of the family, Kylie's travels have taken her all over the world, living and working in London, Ireland and Canada. On her return to Australia she relocated to the Sunshine Coast to soak up the sunshine she'd missed whilst overseas, before taking up an executive assistant role with Tarong Energy in Brisbane.

Roger acknowledged that it's easy when you think you are doing something well to continue doing things the same year on year, particularly with loyal customer support.

"Kylie will be the breath of fresh air needed to bring some of our loved but old-fashioned practices into a modern business environment," he joked.

"I'll be saying goodbye to my cardex stock system and Colleen's beautifully hand-written statements are now a thing of the past thanks to the introduction of a computer system. No doubt customers will be pleased to see EFTPOS facilities, even though it meant saying farewell to the old 'click clack' of the original bankcard machine."

A new innovation that Kylie is pleased to offer is free Nitrogen inflation of all new passenger and 4X4 tyres purchased at Scotney's. Not only can nitrogen assist in maintaining the correct tyre pressure for longer, the large reduction of other gases and water vapour found in tyres results in a more consistent pressure at higher operating temperatures.

A welcome addition to the business is the introduction of an on-site 3D wheel alignment machine.

"Customers today want to know that the tyre expert can follow right through from fitting new tyres to making sure they align well so as to give good vehicle handling, tyre performance and overall safety," Kylie said.

"Wheels that are not aligned correctly can cause premature wear on your tyres and suspension components. Even simple things like bumping into a kerb or driving over a pothole can throw your wheels out of alignment so it's important to get this fixed quickly before it leads to larger problems."

Roger is justifiably proud of the business's humble beginnings to its standing 32 years later as a business committed to its customers and the community that surrounds it.

Kylie will undoubtedly continue the legacy with dad's guidance.
