U16 netball team finish unbeaten
LISA Fitzgerald was delighted with the form of the Warwick 16-years team which was unbeaten in yesterday’s round of the Darling Downs Inter-district competition at Gatton.
Despite bleak conditions on the Southern Downs, the netballers played in perfect weather at Gatton.
The 16-years coach said the grass courts at Gatton were wet under foot which slowed the games down.
“The open and reserves played on the two hard courts while the juniors were on six grass courts,” Fitzgerald said.
Australian Diamonds netball gold medallist Laura Geitz was at the carnival and set up a stall for the weekend launch of her training kits.
“A few of the players in my teams were walking around with autographs from Laura,” Fitzgerald said.
The Warwick 16 years team beat Downlands 18-11, Goondiwindi 19-10, Laidley 18-10 and Toowoomba 20-9.
The finals of open, reserves and all junior age groups will be played on August 7 at Laidley.
Each of the 10 Warwick teams will be involved in round games as the finalists are determined for games in the afternoon.
Fitzgerald said she and Warwick 14 years coach Belinda Fenton were hoping their two teams would clash in the grand final at Laidley in the 15/16 years division.
“Belinda’s team has come up an age group in the second half of the competition and has been on a long winning streak,” Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald also coaches the 13/14 years division 2 team which recorded three wins and one loss yesterday.
“This team has improved dramatically this season and are a chance to make the final in their division,” Fitzgerald said.
Katlyn Shooter and Amber Christensen were the two players to stand out in Fitzgerald’s teams yesterday.
The Warwick 13/14 years division one team under coach Helena Fraser had two wins and two draws yesterday at Gatton.
The Warwick open team won three and drew one game in their final preparation for the country carnival at Graceville this weekend.
They beat Goondiwindi in their final game of the carnival at Gatton.
