Undefeated premiers: Wallaroos produced the perfect season
YOU WOULD be hard-pressed finding any team in any competition that had a better year than Wallaroos' women's hockey side.
Coached by Melissa Wareing and captained by Belinda Kenny, Wallaroos' top-quality team included the likes of junior stars Eden Wareing, Keely Reilly and Anniston Chappell alongside the likes of Australian indoor hockey representative Trudi Pedersen and brilliant attackers like Eva Golusin.
Wallaroos' new-look side was the result of an off-season overhaul.
The club introduced a number of talented youngsters, strengthened their core group of players and spent much more time on the training paddock.
The team gelled perfectly, with an 11th-round 2-2 draw with Granville Rovers the closest Wallaroos got to defeat in the Maryborough District Hockey Association Division 1 competition.
They were similarly dominant in the Premier League.
An undefeated season saw Wallaroos reach the grand final of the competition, which included teams from Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg.
They thrived under the extra pressure and eventually Arrows Athletics 3-1 to claim the regional title.
Wallaroos boasted a perfect balance across the park and it showed.
Throughout the Premier League season, they averaged four goals per game and conceded less than one goal per game.
Their focus switched to MDHA's Division 1 title, and went on to smash Granville Rovers 5-1 in the grand final.
Golusin was named player of the final as Wallaroos won the Patron's Shield (most wins), the Mrs T Black Memorial Shield (minor premiership) and the Beryl Gregg Memorial Trophy (major premiership).
