Wood Street underpass to open

LOVE it or hate it – the Wood Street underpass has divided community opinion in Warwick but one thing is beyond argument and that's its official opening tomorrow.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace will head to the Rose City to officiate at the official opening and interested residents are invited to take part in a walk-through after 3.30pm tomorrow.

The massive engineering feat involved the excavation of 9000 tonnes of rock and dirt, the installation of 12 huge concrete arches each weighing 13 tonnes and the pouring of 1000 square metres of concrete.

The primary function of the underpass is to provide safe access for students of St Mary's School whose campus is split by the national highway, but it will also provide general pedestrian access.

Work this week has involved testing of the disabled access lifts and tiling.
