United are the winners

SHOTS at goal were the order of the night in the second half when Stanthorpe United beat Warwick Wolves 1-0 in the men's grand final in Stanthorpe Football.

United were the better team in the first half and had dominant field position most of the half.

Star striker Brett McEvoy scored the only goal of the game late in the half with a long shot which goalie Damo Young touched as it headed to the top of the goal.

In the second half, United put a shot over the top after 15 seconds and had the better of the early exchanges.

United had three shots in a 10-minute period early in the half but one hit the crossbar, another was wide and Young stopped a third.

The final 30 minutes of play was an outstanding exhibition of end to end football with both sides having numerous shots at goal. Young was outstanding in goal for Warwick and it was the same with United goalie Luke Shearston. Josh Jordan went over the top for Warwick and then Sam McLennan had a shot blocked by Shearston.

As the sun went down and the lights took over, the football just got better.

Rarely does one watch a second half of football with some much play close to goal.

The win capped an outstanding season for the United club which won three of the four premierships on the day.

The women's game was 0-all throughout until three goals were scored in the final five minutes of play.

For the first time, junior colts football was played as part of the senior competition and International were victorious 2-1 against Ballandean.
