Upgrade to lure stream of private jets

AS INTERNATIONAL services expand, there’s hope the Sunshine Coast Airport will be boosted by a permanent Customs office.

That’s the long-term hope of airport operations and assets general manager Frank Mondello.

Customs officers currently came online as required, per flight, travelling up from Brisbane.

But Mr Mondello said he hoped the airport would grow to a point where Customs would be established permanently on-site.

As well as international commercial aircraft, it was expected a Customs presence would also boost services for private jet travellers to the region.

As well as a new runway being constructed, other changes are set to sweep through the airport.

A new apron is in the process of being built, which will hold the aircraft when the switch to the new runway takes place.

Push-back technology has also been rolled out on the runway, meaning aircraft could be pushed back to the runway, to reduce jet blasts close to the terminal.

The baggage X-Ray machine is also set to be upgraded to CT-scan technology in the coming months.

The current system, housed in its own airconditioned “cold room” of sorts, is about two years old, and worth about $450,000.

Mr Mondello said the new CT system was worth about $1.5 million.

He said the current system processed 70-75 per cent of baggage without issue, while manual operators checked over any items that didn’t pass the X-Ray.
