Urban dwellers enjoy country charm
EIGHT couples from the Brisbane 4WD Club, enjoying a weekend at Goomburra, boosted numbers at the quarterly markets at Glengallan Homestead yesterday.
David and Tracey Brettle could rightly claim the Southern Downs as their second home after being to the Southern Downs with the club for three weekends in the past two months.
They regularly stay at two venues at Goomburra and The Springs 4WD Park on the New England Hwy between Warwick and Stanthorpe.
Mr Brettle said it was great to see good old country markets.
As for the homestead, Mrs Brettle said it was sad to see how it had deteriorated down the years, but she was impressed with the way "they were bringing it back".
"The old homes were beautiful in their heyday," she said.
"If only the walls could talk," Mr Brettle said.
Lorraine Welsh, of Lori's Country Kitchen, and homestead canteen volunteer Nicola Beggs agreed the crowd and numbers of stalls were well up.
"It was better than expected. Things have been down a bit in the country," Mrs Welsh said.
