US police shoot armed gunman hiding in movie theatre

CINEMA patrons in California watched as an armed man was gunned down by police on the weekend.

Tom Billodeaux, 20, allegedly hid in a cinema after attacking his girlfriend at a nearby shopping centre.

According to News.com.au, police evacuated patrons in several theatres before finding Mr Billodeaux sitting in the audience at a screening of Les Miserables.

Mr Billodeaux was told to raise his hands but reached for his hand gun and allegedly pointed it at an officer.

He was shot and arrested and remains in hospital under police guard.

The incident happened the day after 25-year-old James Holmes was committed for trial over the alleged massacre at a Colorado cinema last year which claimed the lives of 12 people and left 58 others injured.
