Valley surveyors take the lead

ONE day they might be waist-deep in a river looking for pipes, the next standing in the middle of Grafton Shoppingworld surveying for a new lease arrangement.

Two Clarence Valley surveyors were recognised for their work at the Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information Awards night at Sydney's Shangri-la Hotel.

A Fletcher and Associates surveyor Darryll Smidt took out the Young Professional of the Year award.

"It was pretty good, I'm fairly humbled," Mr Smidt said.

"A lot of the folks in the cities have got a lot more opportunities to participate.

"But I take my job fairly seriously for my clients and I like to get a good outcome for them."

Mr Smidt said he was also recently elected chairman of the Institution of Surveyors NSW North Coast Group.

"You get a mix of out doing fieldwork then you're in the office doing paperwork," he said.

He is working on preliminary work for the Pacific Hwy upgrade.

Harrison Shepherd Pty Ltd surveyor Wendy Shepherd Harrison won the Urban Cadastral Surveying and Land Titling award for her work on the Maclean Town Centre redefinition.

"It's a particularly complex job," Mrs Shepherd Harrison said.

"I went back and traced the original 1923 survey plan. It was a very interesting job historically.

"When you get old jobs, it's like solving a jigsaw puzzle with pieces where the sides all move."

Mrs Shepherd Harrison said she loved the outdoors aspect of being a surveyor.

"At the moment I'm working along the waterfront, that's pretty good when you're working in a beautiful spot like Yamba."
