Vandal smashes car yard vehicles

WARWICK business owner Ray Vincent received a gut-wrenching call this morning when he was told cars in his Percy St car yard had been vandalised.

Mr Vincent – who also owns Bestbrook Resort – said he was unable to get into town to see the damage for a couple of hours and said the anticipation of what he would find made it worse.

“I’m devastated. It is just horrible and uncalled for,” he said.

“I have been in the industry for 40 years and this is the first time this happened to me,” he said.

“I just feel sick in the stomach. I work seven days a week – I don’t need this.”

Mr Vincent said a staff member told him the cars were all in order at noon yesterday and said the cars must have been vandalised sometime between then and this morning.

He said he was hopeful CCTV footage would help identify the people responsible.

“The consensus is it was done with a steel bar,” he said.

“It would have been a very strong person and they’ve really put some effort into it.”

“It’s just vindictive. The gutless person who has done it has picked a car you can’t see from the street,” he said.

A Daewoo Matiz and a Holden Commodore ute were targeted in the attack and resulted in extensive damage to both cars, but the Matiz came off the worse of the two.

The Daewoo didn’t have a pane of glass left intact after the destructive attack and its damage is estimated to be around $3000.

All of the windows and the windscreen were smashed in, as were the rear lights and there was extensive boot, door and panel damage.

The Holden didn’t suffer as much damage but had its rear window shattered and body damage, with a damage bill expected to be around $750.

Neighbouring business Styan and Lindenberg were also victims of the vandalism spree and suffered damage to five doors.

Employee Malcolm Clark said he arrived at work just after 7.30 this morning to discover two roller doors and three wooden doors kicked in.

At this stage it is not believed anything was stolen.

Mr Clark said he believed the assailants were “bludging cowards” and needed something better to do with their time.

A police spokesman said the areas would be analysed by scenes of crime officers but it appeared the two incidents were related.

Anyone with information is urged to call Warwick Police on 4660 4444 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
