Vehicle reaches speed of 153kmh

A MAN who was clocked by a mobile radar driving 153kmh on the Cunningham Hwy near the Leslie Dam turn-off on Saturday afternoon will front the Warwick Magistrate Court this morning charged with a string of traffic offences.

A Warwick police spokesman said he was clocked travelling 53kmh over the speed limit on Saturday.

"Police clocked him travelling at 153kmh in a 100kmh zone along the Cunningham Hwy near Leslie Dam," he said.

"When police attempted to intercept him, he headed east and nearly ran into the back of a lady driving along the highway near Akooramak before fishtailing out of control."

The driver allegedly continued to overtake vehicles in a dangerous manner as he sped along Wood St.

The New South Wales man then lost control of his vehicle and hit a power pole at the intersection of Tooth and Wood Sts.

But not even that stopped the man in his red Holden Commodore sedan.

The driver allegedly tried to make a break along the New England Hwy towards Stanthorpe.

Police were able to catch up to him and the driver pulled over near Dalveen.

The police spokesman said the driver was arrested.

"He has been charged with several traffic offences including evading police, speeding, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving," he said.

"He will be kept in the cells over the weekend until (today)."

The man's car was impounded.

He is due to appear in court first thing this morning.
