Man takes roommate's car for smokes, crashes it

WHEN a Warwick man returned his roommate's car to her garage, he failed to mention that he'd taken it without permission, and that he'd crashed it and caused almost $10,000 worth of damage.

Isaac John George took the woman's car to buy cigarettes on the evening of August 10, despite having neither permission nor a licence.

The Warwick Magistrates Court last week heard the 22-year-old travelled a short distance before crashing the Holden Cruze into a barbed wire fence.

Instead of confessing to his roommate, George drove the car back to the garage and returned the keys to where he'd found them.

The owner woke the next morning to find a hubcap and mirror missing from her car and significant dents and scratches to the vehicle.

During his court appearance, George expressed a willingness to repay the debt but said he would need to pay it off.

He was ordered to complete 50 hours of community service over the next 12 months and to pay $9627 in restitution.
