Warwick veterans on game debut

DAVE Zwoerner will be the goalie as the Warwick veteran’s hockey team heads to Clyde Park for its debut game against Tigers in the Toowoomba Hockey Association competition tonight at 7.15pm.

Team organiser Phil Rolfe said the veteran’s competition was not restricted to men.

“Toni Cox played in the Toowoomba ladies’ competition last season and will be used in the forwards for Warwick,” Rolfe said.

“She has played interstate hockey so we will take advantage of her experience.”

While Zwoerner is the main goalie, forward Drew Jackson can fill in at the back if required.

All Warwick games will be played at Clyde Park in Toowoomba and Rolfe is hoping that a couple of games in 2011 could be played in Warwick.

For the first six weeks of the season, all Warwick games on a Thursday night will be at 7.15pm and 8.30pm.

Seven teams play in the veteran’s competition, five from the current Toowoomba clubs, Red Lions, Rangeville, Norths, Past High and Newtown, a second Newtown side named Tigers, and Warwick.

The major warm up for the Warwick side was the Condamine Sports Club Sevens at Queen’s Park a fortnight ago.

Last season, Rolfe played for Rangeville in the veteran’s competition and expects his old club and Red Lions to be the strongest.

The team: Dave Zwoerner, Steve Farrell, Wayne Bishop, Don Battese, Gary Millard, John Creed, Craig McKay, Peter Pickering, Greg McDonald, Toni Cox, Rob Eastwell, Phil Rolfe, Larry O’Brien, Dave Jordan, Drew Jackson and Greg Throw.
