Victorians in town for a polocrosse weekend
POLOCROSSE: Have horses, truck and dedication - that is all that is needed for Victorian pair Steve Nolan and Sam Cook to follow a polocrosse dream.
The two members of the Victorian open side playing in this weekend’s Barastoc Interstate Series at Morgan Park live in the Northern Territory but play for Victoria.
They are originally from Victoria but have businesses in the Northern Territory and are fly in, fly out polocrosse players.
Both went to the Northern Territory for more work, Nolan with a plumbing business and Sam Cook as an earthmoving contractor.
Sam’s father Ray Cook lives in Victoria and looks after the horses between carnivals.
Often the pair will fly home for a week of work in their businesses but there is a lot of driving as well as flying with many carnivals a long distance from the nearest airport.
They have been playing for 22 years and are part of the Rosedale club in the Gippsland area of Victoria.
This weekend, the whole focus of the Victorian team is to prepare for the nationals starting April 18 in Albury.
While they always want to win, getting horses and combinations right was the main aim.
Long-term, both want to play for Australia and know that impressive performances in each interstate series and the nationals every two years are needed to catch the eye of selectors.
For Ray who looks after the horses and left Victoria early Monday, it was important for horses to have adequate rest after a long trip. In the past year, the trio have played in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Northern Territory and now Queensland.
