Vikki Paxton to return to Morgan Park this weekend

MOTORSPORT: A thrilling weekend of racing is lined up at Morgan Park Raceway with round two of the super sprint A series set to heat up the track.

Vikki Paxton is leading the series after round one.

Warwick District Sporting Car Club president Michael Reynolds said Paxton was in a good position to hold her lead.

Securing the win will be about handling the balance between endurance and speed, he said. "She's very competitive and she enjoys it out there," Reynolds said. "It's a real treat to see her run so this would be a great weekend to see her in her V8 formula libre. It's the closest thing you'll get to a formula one car."

Nine Cobras will be taking to the track over Saturday and Sunday as well as a fleet of Sprite cars.

Reynolds said it would be an impressive sight for spectators. "A lot of the drivers like to group in so they enter the same round so they can all drive together," he said.

There are 102 entries for the event, including three parent-child pairs.

Warwick driver Matt Clift will race with his son Tom alongside Michael and Maddison Crowe.

Steve de Lissa will also compete with his daughter Chloe, who will be celebrating her 18th birthday on Sunday.

There are four rounds in each of the three super sprints series, labelled A, B and C.

At the weekend, drivers will compete on the 1.5 kilometre circuit. Reynolds said the fastest drivers would complete each lap in about one minute.

They will begin from a standing start and then do a warm-up lap, before four flying laps with a flying finish.

A cool down lap will round out the run.

Reynolds said each driver would do four runs on Saturday and three runs on Sunday.

Labelled "gentleman's racing", Reynolds said the event attracted a large field of drivers because it was cost effective.

"You can take your street car or your race car, no one hits each other because you're racing against the clock," he said.

The weekend is designed to be family-oriented with children welcome to walk up to the pits and view cars up close.

"If they want to help out and wave a flag then we'll put them out there with someone," Reynolds said.

The competition will run 8am-4.30pm on Saturday and 8am-1pm on Sunday.
