Violent man tasered after assaulting police in Coolum

POLICE officers in Coolum were forced to use a taser and capsicum spray to stop a violent man.

A female traffic officer had stopped for a break in patrol on David Low Way yesterday afternoon when approached by a 49-year-old Booroobin man.

With hundreds of holiday makers in view, the man began to abuse her and she called for assistance. Nearby crews attended and the man approached the officers with raised fists.

After backing away, the officer presented her taser which initially calmed the man down.

He suddenly became aggressive with the threatening manner and was warned again.

When he ignored the police warnings and continued forward the officer shot him with her taser and the man fell to the ground.

He immediately got up and approached the officer once more. Capsicum spray was then used on the man and he was detained.

Not finished with there, the man was taken to Maroochydore watchouse where he spat at a female police officer, striking her on the neck.

He appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon and was remanded in custody to reappear on February 9.

The man has been charged with two counts of obstructing police, one count of public nuisance, one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of serious assault of a police officer by spitting.
