Visiting cricketers coming to town with new second team

CRICKET: Thirty-three teams will play in the annual Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival from January 26-28.

Warwick Cricket Association president Dave Walker said the number of teams was up from 30.

"A team will play in memory of the late Basil Nolan as Basil's XI,” Walker said.

"Stewart Henderson is putting in a team in memory of his father, Ross, which will be known as Ross's XI.”

A second team from Goomeri, Average Joe's, will play for the first time.

Goomeri Giants have fielded a team in Warwick for the past 27years and organiser Steve Alexander will be in charge for the 26th time.

Games will be played on fields in Warwick, Allora, Maryvale, Yangan, Killarney and Wheatvale. All games will be T20 cricket.

The draw for the first two days of the carnival will be done at the Hawker Rd Function Centre on January 18. Three teams will be allocated to one ground each day for a round robin of three games.

Walker said the association would be happy to receive any offers of help from volunteers or umpires.

"We could do with another six umpires to take the pressure off our current umpires,” he said.

One umpire will be appointed for each game. It is expected 21 teams will play in the competitive competition and 12 in the social.
