Volleyroos stand tall to qualify for second round

The Volleyroos will take on Iran when the second round of pool matches begin at the World Volleyball Championships in Poland tomorrow.

The Australians will also take on France, Italy and the US later in the week as they bid to move on in the tournament.

They managed to get through to the second round of games for the first time since debuting at the world championships in 1982 after a thrilling five-set victory over Venezuela in their final round one game a day after being thrashed 3-0 by Argentina.

The Volleyroos needed to win to advance yesterday and exeperienced trio Nathan Roberts, Travis Passier and Harry Peacock helped the team, coached by Jon Uriarte, race to a 15-9 first-set lead and they eventually took that out 25-20.

Venezuela took the next two sets 25-23 and 25-21 but just when it looked as if their tournament was over, the Aussies won the fourth 25-16 before taking out the decider 15-9 for a place in history.
