Volunteers keen to show they care

IN AMONGST the biscuits, lollies, toiletries, deodorants and small clothing items strewn across the floor, a handful of people work silently divvying the items up and placing them into boxes.

After being packed and labelled, the hundred or so care packages will find their way overseas to Afghanistan, and fall into the hands of Australian soldiers.

The packages - organised by 25/49 Battalion, 1FD Squadron, Veterans Support and Advocacy Service (VSASA) Warwick and the Warwick RSL - will reach the troops in time for Christmas.

The items have been bought with money raised from the groups, as well as donated by members of the public.

Children from three Warwick primary schools have also pitched in, creating Christmas cards for the soldiers and donating toys for the overseas dogs.

One of the volunteers, Private Robert Stalker, said there had been a large amount of support for the packages.

"One person came in and she'd gone and purchased a lot of items for us," he said.

"We've tried to get a mixture of things, from things the soldiers can eat to personal care items."

People can still donate items this week at Westpac Bank, where there is a display trolley in the front of the business.

Dog toys and food are a popular choice, but anything non-perishable would be welcome. Magazines for men, such as fishing or hunting, are also popular.

Children are encouraged to create Christmas cards with messages of support inside.
