VWs roll into Warwick for weekend of racing

DRAG RACING: The VW Warwick drag racing weekend is back for the 12th year this Saturday and Sunday.

The fastest Volkswagen drag cars will travel from all corners of the country to attend the annual two-day event at Warwick Dragway.

Rod Penrose, Jason Frost, David Richardson, Wayne Penrose, Ben Ford, Scott Alder, 'Dangerous' Dave Butler and Chris Bolton will be some of the big name drivers vying for top honours. This year 90 cars will fill the staging lanes.

The V8-powered 1956 Beetle drag car dubbed Nasty Bug will be driven by David Cliffe from Yarrawonga in New South Wales this weekend.

This will be the first time Nasty Bug has competed in a VW Warwick event.

Nasty Bug will compete in the VW bodied other engine bracket, but will most definitely move into the top VW shootout finals for the fastest cars.

With four-second passes predicted, Cliffe will have plenty of company down the 200m (1/8th mile) track.

The two-day program begins with a static car show in Leslie Park on Saturday from 9.30am to 11am where the general public can get up close and personal with the drag cars before they begin practice and qualifying at Warwick Dragway at 1-5pm Saturday.

This will be followed by dinner and activities in the main marquee on Saturday evening ahead of a good night's rest before the non-elimination four round robin competition and finals.

Sunday also has a show'n'shine at the track plus swap and trade sites.

Gates open 9am both days.

As an added bonus, VW Magazine Australia has brought back the VWMA rat beetle, and the challenge for the weekend is to score $50 in cash if a driver comes up against the rat and manages to beat it down the track.

VW Magazine owner Craig Hughes said as the rat bug and driver were a little rusty, the chance of some upset victories were high on the cards.

Warwick District Drag Racing Association vice-president John Loy said 30 volunteers from the Warwick association would be involved.

"We will have volunteers at the gate, in the canteen, on the track and around the complex to help run the meeting,” he said.

"There are some VW drivers in the Warwick area, one has six VW vehicles.

"The VW Warwick weekend is one of our biggest of the year. The event will start with a dyno night on Friday where admission is free”.

The Warwick association has its own fire engine on site and a firefighter who will be on duty all weekend.

There will also be a first aid person on site.

Loy said while there were few incidents at the drags, safety was paramount.

Admission is $10 each day with children under 13 free.

After this weekend, there will be more action at the Warwick Dragway on October 14-15 when the second round of the JP Racing Dragfest series will be held.

With plenty of racing action at the VW Warwick meeting, off track entertainment, heaps of free giveaways, and great food and refreshments, going to Warwick Dragway is an excellent way for motorsport enthusiasts to spend the long weekend.
