Walker enjoys his chance for Country in AFL rep footy
AUSTRALIAN RULES: Warwick Redbacks player Brent Walker set up two goals as Toowoomba City beat Country in the AFL Darling Downs men's representative game at Rockville Oval on Saturday.
The City versus Country rep game had not been played since 2013, with Country taking out the past two contests.
Walker was the one Warwick player in the Country side which went down 15.13 (103) to 9.12 (66) this time around.
"It was great to come up against a lot of skilled players in the game,” Walker said.
"I reckon I played all right,” he said.
Walker landed three behinds for Country playing in the forwards.
He is upbeat about the Redbacks leading the division 2 competition this season but said it was too early to talk about a definite premiership win.
"The plan is to win the division 2 flag and then go back to division 1 next season where we can enjoy the tougher competition.”
City held narrow leads after the first and second quarters before kicking away with six goals to two in the third quarter.
John Leidig and Carl Stevenson each kicked four goals in the win, while Michael O'Donoghue slotted three.
"It was a great result. It was a good, high standard of footy," said City midfielder and AFL Queensland regional manager Jeff Neumann.
"It was good for Toowoomba City to get the victory and to play in that standard of game is good for any player."
Three players with a Redbacks connection, Shane Iles, Tyhe Clarkson and Coen Slatter, were in the City team as they are playing division 1 this season in Toowoomba. Iles marked Walker for part of the game.
Redbacks won go well
THE day also featured a QAFL match between Western Magpies and Surfers Paradise, and started with the women's City versus Country match.
It was a double success for City as the women's team won 13.4 (82) to 7.4 (46). Shania Roy from the Demonic Redbacks (Lockyer Valley/Redbacks) kicked a goal for Country.
Redbacks players Sarah McKendry, Charlee Elliott, Samantha Burton and Kasper Hicks all played strongly for Country.
Jayde Struhs kicked five goals for City while Jess Gilbey nailed three on her way to being named best on ground.
