Wallangarra clears rabbit warrens

WALLANGARRA residents currently affected by rabbit infestation may soon find relief through financial rebates.

In attempts to eradicate the problem, the Southern Downs Regional Council has again joined with the Queensland Murray- Darling Committee (QMDC) to convince landholders to partake and to offer them incentives.

Wallangarra is believed to be one of the worst infested areas on the Southern Downs according to QMDC CEO Geoff Penton.

"Southern Downs Regional Council and ourselves, we have identified that Wallangarra... is a particular hotspot for rabbits and what we're trying to do is knock the rabbit numbers down as best we can and one of the best ways to do that is get rid of the warrens," he said.

Letters were sent out over the past fortnight, encouraging landholders to participate in the program and offering to help cover costs for those who do.

Southern Downs manager environmental services Tim O'Brien said the letters sent explained the rebates would apply in two stages.

"Landholders who undertake approved works will be able to claim back 30% of the cost of control," he said.

"In the first stage, only land located to the east of the Wallangarra golf course will be considered eligible at this time.

"This is because any mechanical-type control work undertaken within the immediate area of the release site, prior to the release, may hinder the effectiveness and spread of the K5 virus.

"However, a second stage of similar rebates will be offered to other Wallangarra landholders for control works that are timed to occur immediately after the K5 virus release, which will be in March 2017."

Mr Penton said the main works for the program will be to remove rabbit warrens, similar to the works completed at Eukey a number of years ago, which was a success.

"We've worked with quite a number of landowners in the Eukey area around Storm King Dam," he said.

"We've done rabbit warren ripping on quite a number of properties in that area."

While work has not yet started, Mr Penton said that so far landholders were on board.

"We haven't had anyone that's done the work yet but the general feedback has been quite positive," he said.

"We encourage as many property owners within the target areas to come on board, to contact either Craig Magnussen at the council or ourselves."
