Wanderers cut ties with Bulut

FOOTBALL: Kerem Bulut's unhappy homecoming has ended with Western Sydney Wanderers announcing that the striker has been released with immediate effect.

The striker, who returned to the A-League on a two-year deal this season, has been on the outer of Tony Popovic's squad for several weeks.

The club announced in a statement that he has been released to pursue other "professional opportunities”, mooted to be in Asia, with Thai interest rumoured in recent weeks.

Bulut, 24, returned home as a much-hyped signing but a sign of his demise came with his omission in recent games, despite being fit to play and the Wanderers enduring struggles up front.

Lachlan Scott has been preferred alongside Brendon Santalab in Popovic's squad, amid rumours linking the club with Jamie Maclaren, Didier Drogba, Eduardo, Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane in a bid to solve the side's scoring woes.

The Wanderers have already signed Vedran Janjetovic in the start of the squad surgery, luring the Sydney FC goalkeeper to boost their backline. Now the search continues for cavalry up front.

Bulut was a popular figure at Wanderland after returning to Australia from Turkey, before leaving again to play 2015-16 with Greek club Iraklis.

Western Sydney, sitting seventh on the table, next faces Perth on New Year's Day.

Santalab, meanwhile, has been suspended for the Wanderers' next three games. The striker accepted a two-match suspension following his dismissal against Brisbane last weekend, and will serve that suspension in addition to a one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards.

Perth's Dino Djulbic and Melbourne City's Fernando Brandan have also copped bans after Tuesday's clash at AAMI Park. Djulbic is out for three games while Brandan will miss two, after both were sent off in final minutes of the 3-3 draw.
