Warm up with wood this winter

DARREN Hart's Firewood business has started gathering customers stocking up for winter.

He said his business supplied mainly iron bark timber cleared from farming properties (for which farmers are paid royalties).

"We send a fair bit away as well to Sydney and Brisbane and surrounds," he said.

"We sold about 400 tonnes last year and will probably go over this year."

Although the boom in business has perhaps made him a little biased, Mr Hart said wood was the way to go for winter warmth.

"Wood's the best heat you can get, in my opinion," he said.

"It's better than a reverse cycle air conditioner where as soon as you turn it off the warmth just goes.

"It can just smoulder all night and one piece of wood will last you for a lot longer."

Mr Hart recommended dry iron bark wood for the best fire.

He said green wood could be damaging to the chimney and was more likely to go out and lose heat.

"It burns a lot hotter and you get big red hot coals which keep your house nice and warm," he said.

"The drier the wood, the better it will burn - green wood can block your chimney, it can create more sparks and it's fairly smoky as well."

Mr Hart said it was important to remember to be safe around fire.

He urged people to keep flammable materials away from chimneys and especially keep children away from fireplaces.

"Keep your chimneys clear and make sure insulation is clear of it," he said.

"Have a fire screen at the front and a good mat on your carpet to stop sparks coming out."

"If you have your chimney cleaned out every year before winter and stick to a reputable supplier you won't have a problem."
