Warmth, wind blow away Warwick’s April frosts
IT MAY be cooling down on the Southern Downs, but the region’s first frost could still be weeks away.
While the first frosts are usually expected around Anzac Day, the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting our first freeze may not come until later next month.
According to Bureau statistics, temperatures have been well above average.
The average maximum temperature for April so far is 27 degrees, more than two degrees above average.
The warmer weather combined with windier than normal conditions has all but blown away the chances of an April frost.
Senior forecaster Michelle Berry said overnight winds in recent days had kept minimum temperatures above average.
“As we move into May, we will see drier air and lighter wind strength,” she said.
“That’s when we will see those frosts.”
Forecasters are also predicting a warmer than average winter across the Southern Downs.
“Broadly speaking April through to June, there is a chance for temperatures to remain a little bit above average,” Ms Berry said.
“One thing is guaranteed and that’s Warwick will get frosts in winter.”
