Warren Truss defends LNP’s national broadband plan

FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss has defended the LNP's plan for a national broadband network.

While Labor has attacked the LNP plan for using slow and outdated technology, Mr Truss said it would be more affordable and be delivered sooner than Labor's NBN.

"Under the Coalition's plan, everyone in Wide Bay will have access to high-speed broadband by 2016. Under Labor's NBN, not a single Wide Bay household is scheduled to be connected to the NBN cable until well after 2016," Mr Truss said.

"People in my electorate have waited and waited for high-speed broadband while Labor's NBN has been duplicating fibre optic broadband in the cities.

"The Coalition's broadband plan will bring more affordable, fast internet access, sooner to Wide Bay," Mr Truss said. "Labor's NBN promise was big, costly and cumbersome and it has failed to deliver," he said.

"In 2007, Kevin Rudd promised that every Australian would have fast broadband by 2013 at a cost of $4.7billion. It is now 2013, and the NBN has signed up only 10,400 users for its fibre network and the final cost is expected to be over $90 billion."

Mr Truss said it was time to turn the focus of the NBN to those communities where it was needed and be more transparent.

"Families, small businesses, schools and hospitals need fast broadband now and not sometime after 2021 as would happen with Labor's plan," he said. "Under the Coalition's plan, those communities with substandard service will receive priority to connect them sooner."
