Warwick bookworms go batty for big book sale

WARWICK residents snapped up more than 9000 books this weekend at the annual Rotary Club of Warwick Sunrise Big Book Sale.

The Southern Downs community donated more than 30,000 books for the sale and club president David Kemp was ecstatic with the result.

"Friday went absolutely gangbusters,” he said.

"Saturday was busy all day as well and today has seen a steady flow, it hasn't really stopped all weekend.

"There were people everywhere and being school holidays there were families and kids everywhere, which was wonderful to see.”

Every child was given a free book or puzzle across the duration of the sale.

"It was really satisfying to see how many kids were keen to get their hands on the books to take home,” Mr Kemp said.

"They obviously love their books and they knew what they like and what they wanted, which is great to see in this day and age.”

Mr Kemp said the club was proud to promote not only literacy on the Southern Downs but also the Warwick Railway goods shed, the historic venue for the Big Book Sale.

"It was surprising the amount of people who'd never seen it up close before,” he said.

"People who've lived here their whole lives and never been inside.”

Mr Kemp said massive thanks were to go to the Southern Downs Steam Railway.

"Not only for the amazing venue, which is one of only a few big enough to host an event like this, but also for being here the whole weekend, manning the barbecue and supplying Warwick's bookworms with food and drinks,” he said.

"We couldn't have managed this without them and thanks also to everyone who donated books and everyone who came along and walked away with a box to take home.”

The event has been in the planning since December and the Warwick Club of Rotary Sunrise team have been sorting and categorising the thousands of books since January.

All funds raised from the Big Book Sale will go towards local organisations and charities, community and Rotary projects.

Work on the next event will start immediately with more boxes of books being donated all the time.
