Warwick boxers in work four days a week
CLUB IN FOCUS
THE Warwick Boxing Club has eight boxers in training and many more involved in the fitness side of the club.
Peter Liesegang is trainer and was at the novice state championships in Brisbane at the weekend.
Club member David Kern won in a walkover and is the novice state champion in the 81kg division.
Will Pratt was runner-up in 64kg so won a silver medal, his first at state level. His fight could have gone either way with Pratt giving away a lot of height to his opponent.
Liesegang trains boxers from 4.30-6pm each weekday. There is fitness training from 6pm Monday to Thursday.
The eight boxers in Liesegang's squad spar against members from the Rose City Club as well as two boxers with experience at professional level, Kyle Teer and Chris Fox.
The boxing club gym is at the western end of Albert St and there is an Olympic sized ring in the gym.
Liesegang said the day-to-day training was in fitness and some work on punching bags, shadow boxing and pad work.
"We boost our sparring in the run up to championships,” he said.
The Warwick club will be on the road to six boxing tournaments this year, including the Golden Gloves in Brisbane and state championships.
The club trainer said boxers new to the sport would train for at least six months before their first fight.
