Cop found guilty of 'childish' assault on fellow officer

A WARWICK police officer was found guilty for minor assault against a colleague.

On Monday the Brisbane Magistrates Court heard Senior Constable Brett Hughes knocked into the back of Senior Sergeant Lisa Self last year.

Magistrate Barry Cosgrove called the action "childish" before handing down a $120 fine.

The court heard that on the afternoon of July 31 the defendant purposely headed towards the senior sergeant when entering the room and walked straight into her right shoulder.

The senior sergeant said it took her "a number of seconds to process what happened".

"Because I was tense I didn't move at that time," she said.

"And then I felt a harder push into my back that caused me to lose my footing and to stumble forwards."

Three other police officers prepared witness statements and agreed that Hughes purposely knocked into Snr Sgt Self.

It is believed the two weren't friendly when Snr Sgt Self testified, saying the defendant had previously lodged a complaint against her conduct.

Magistrate Cosgrove told Hughes to have respect for his colleagues.

"Cool-headed behaviour at all times is what police officers are called on to do when they are out there dealing with members of the public," he said.

"That sort of behaviour should exist in a police station."

No conviction was recorded.
