Warwick chef's dinner date with Gordon Ramsay
IT'S not everyday an everyday Aussie gets to spend some quality time with their idol, who also happens to be a world megastar.
But for Warwick chef and Tafe hospitality teacher Jamie Fischer, that's exactly what happened back in January.
Mr Fischer, thanks to his thoughtful and enterprising wife Cathryn, scored some exclusive tickets to the open of Australian chef Matt Moran's new Sydney restaurant Bea.
Special guest for the occasion, was none other than culinary firebrand Gordon Ramsay.
"It was an inspirational moment for me,” he said.
"Sure I was a bit scared, but Gordon is a hero of mine and always has been.
"But he was awesome - I invited him to the table and he came over and sat down, did the selfie thing and then just wanted to chat, about my job and food.
"I was buzzing. I'm still buzzing.”
Mr Fischer said the day started well and got better.
"It was my birthday,” Mr Fischer said.
"And I was sure to let everybody know.
"The drinks were flowing, the food was sensational - a six course degustation shared meal, with only the best ingredients.
"In the end though it was just simple Aussie food, with inexpensive matching Australian wines, everything just worked so well together.”
Mr Fischer said meeting those who sat at the top of his chosen field had left an indelible mark on him.
"It was a massive highlight for me,” he said.
"You know that question, 'who are the three people you'd like to go to dinner with?' - well I've done that now.
"As soon as I got back to Warwick, I reached out to the network of chefs in the region, we all know each other and I wanted to pass on some of my excitement for what we do.”
Mr Fischer said chefs in the region were spoiled for choice.
"We've got access some of the best produce in the country right here,” he said.
"And some very talented chefs, so I wanted to see some ideas bouncing around, getting people excited about our region, staying seasonal and always striving to stay inspired.
"We could up our game in Warwick and rival Stanthorpe and what they do so well.”
Mr Fischer has created a Facebook page called The Darling Downs Chef Network Australia to foster his passion for food among the region's chefs.
