Warwick concreter takes on track for adrenalin rush

RUNNING your own business can make down time hard to come by, but a Warwick concreter has found an exhilarating solution to help ensure he has time to relax and spend time with his family.

Nathan Locke spends his spare time racing cars, a hobby he has cultivated since the age of 15.

Mr Locke makes adjustments to his car himself, with help from the EFI Logic team in Warwick, even after a long day at work.

"It's something where you get home at 5pm and you go to the shed and work on this,” he said.

"It's good to get away from work and relax.”

But recording faster times is the motivation that spurs him on.

This weekend, he reached speeds of 150km/hr to complete with a time of 1.18min.

Mr Locke runs the Holden HQ Series and has travelled to Ipswich and Brisbane to compete.

Growing up around racing, he said before a race he would spend time the week before changing oil, checking the brakes and doing maintenance.

On race day he always looks forward to the adrenaline rush and atmosphere, which he enjoys alongside his wife, Jacinta, their two-year-old daughter, Ava.

Mr Locke said Ava was already eager to get in on the action, with go karts on the cards as soon as she's old enough to drive.

"She's always warning to come into the shed and help me,” he said.

But Mr Locke has no hesitation about his daughter entering the sport and encourages others to give it a go.

"You can have your road car and all you need is long pants and a shirt and you can enter the series,” he said.

"You don't need a lot of money to do it.”

Mr Locke is taking part in round 3c of the Queensland Super Sprint series, being held at Morgan Park Raceway today and tomorrow.
