Warwick connection to Rodeo Hall of Fame inductions
RODEO: The Warwick Show and Rodeo Society, Peter Poole and Ray Crawford are three of this year's inductees to the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
The Rodeo Hall of Fame honour board is at the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre in Alice St, Warwick, and inductions take place each year during Warwick Rodeo Week. The first four inductions were in 2015.
Warwick Show and Rodeo Society president John Kiss said Hall of Fame recognition was a reward for the 350 volunteers who worked during the rodeo each year.
"It also reflects on the enormous amount of work that has gone into the society for the past 150 years,” he said.
"For more than half that time, Warwick has hosted the most famous rodeo in Australia.
"While Mt Isa has higher prizemoney, we have the biggest crowd.”
He said Hall of Fame recognition recognised the close working relationship between the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society and the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
"Both organisations are keen to maintain the standard of the rodeo, which now includes the APRA national finals.”
Kiss said despite the presentation ceremony being during a busy week, the society would be well represented at the dinner on October 26 at Douglas Feez Pavilion.
Peter Poole joined the Australian Rough Riders Association, now APRA, in 1954, and was secretary for 18 years.
He was a competitor and recalls being knocked out in wild cow milking at the Theodore Rodeo in 1956.
Poole started writing articles for Hoofs and Horns in 1957 to help with his memory on the way to a full recovery and was the ARRA member who suggested Warwick as the site for head office, as it was half-way between the rodeo strongholds in the north and south.
He was the first secretary after the move to Warwick and remembers sleeping in the back of the office in Fitzroy St.
Poole won the steer wrestling and made the bull riding final at the Warwick Rodeo and lists Dally Holden as the member who had the most influence on his career as a rider and administrator.
Ray Crawford was originally from Narrandera in New South Wales and along with wife Val lived at Gleneagle at Beaudesert before moving to Elbow Valley.
"Ray was good at all events,” Poole said.
He won the rope and tie/bronc ride double at Mt Isa as well as nine APRA titles, two all around, four rope and tie and one title in three other events, steer wrestling, saddle bronc and bareback.
The Lang Lang (Victoria) Rodeo Committee will also be inducted this year along with six individuals.
Reg McNair from Melbourne was best man at the wedding of Peter Poole and wife Anna in 1963 and more than 50 years later the mates will be at the ceremony for their inductions. Norm Cakebread, Ray Crawford, Dan Crotty and Kevin McTaggart will be represented by family.
Doors to the dinner on October 26 will open at 5pm and APRA office administrator Karen Burraston is hoping for a crowd of 150. There will be a three-course dinner.
