Warwick connection to world title win

PARATRIATHLON: Emily Tapp has won a gold medal in the ITU World Paratriathlon Series meet at Edmonton in Canada.

Tapp now heads to the Warwick area three times a year where her mother Traci McHours lives and has lived in the Southern Downs area on and off since her family moved from the Northern Territory in 2006.

She has already qualified for this year's world championships in September in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and next year's Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast.

Tapp completed the 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run in the paratriathlon to win in Edmonton by 15 minutes from the runner up.

She is now based at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

When in the Warwick area to see her mother, Tapp trains on her bike and on her track chair (for the run) on local roads along with her step-father Eric Klaui.

McHours said her daughter was flying home to Australia today.

"She may be in the Warwick area for a few days in the lead up to the world championships,” McHours said.

"Emily is really excited about her performance in Edmonton and is looking forward to the world championships.

"Her best at the worlds is silver so Emily is aiming for gold this year.”

She is one of two athletes who have already qualified for next year's Commonwealth Games in April at the Gold Coast.

Paratriathlon will be contested for the first time at Olympic level in Tokyo on 2020.
