Warwick Cowboys never say die attitude pays off in win at Highfields
RUGBY LEAGUE: Winger Brodie Quirk scored a try in the corner and Morgan Taylor converted after the hooter to give the Warwick Cowboys a 24-22 victory against Highfields in A-grade at Highfields yesterday.
The score was 18-all at half-time and remained the same until Highfields scored in the 25th minute of the second half.
Warwick was down 22-18 before Quirk scored after a good backline movement.
"Brodie couldn't have been closer to the corner post and Morgan's conversion just fell over the black dot for the win," Cowboys president David O'Leary said.
"Sam Broomhall led the forward well all day and Dylan Galloway was strong again in the centres scoring two tries."
In the first game of the day, the Warwick Cowboys won under-18s 38-22 after leading all the way.
David Hallman played his 273rd game for the Cowboys in reserve grade to break the club game record and won the player of the match award presented by the Toowoomba Rugby League.
O'Leary said it was a great day for the Cowboys with Hallman's record and three wins.
"The three wins mean we will maintain a one-point lead in the club championship over Pittsworth," O'Leary said.
Highfields led 12-6 at half-time in reserve grade and with 10 minutes to go before scoring two late tries to win 16-12.
Brett Benz scored with 10 minutes to go and then James Breen crossed for the match winner with two minutes to go. Mitch McMahon converted the last try for two goals on the day.
Both Warwick under-18 and reserve-grade teams are unbeaten so are strong chances to qualify for the President's Cup finals for the leading two teams at the end of the first round.
The Cowboys have one game on May 7, an Under-18 clash against Border at Tenterfield, and then four games will be played as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations against Pittsworth at Father Ranger Oval on May 14. Both A and reserve-grade teams now have two weekends off.
