Warwick cricket has bye after withdrawal of one team

CRICKET: Inglewood Roos have withdrawn from the Warwick Cricket Association Condamine Cup competition this season.

The Roos have won A and reserve-grade premierships in Warwick since moving from the Goondiwindi competition but player numbers have been down this season.

Inglewood club president Jeremy Ralph said the club made a decision to withdraw out for respect for the Warwick Cricket Association.

"We have forfeited twice this season and it is only Christmas, we couldn't keep doing it,” he said.

"The club was reluctant to withdraw from the competition but a decision had to be made. In a conversation with association president Michael Bourke, he said the door would be left open for Inglewood to return.

"We are keen to start again next season but I am not optimistic. We had some recruits this season but due to jobs had to leave town.

"A lot of our players work every second weekend and due to the schedules, weren't able to play as often as they would have liked.”

Warwick Cricket Association secretary Greg Payne said he was hoping Inglewood would return next season.

"We want to see cricket played in Inglewood and from an association perspective, eight teams is better than seven,” he said.

With Inglewood out, there will be a bye for the rest of the fixture season.

"We are keen for current Inglewood players to join Warwick Cricket Association clubs needing more players.”

TWO teams can still be accommodated to bring numbers up to 30 for the Condamine Sports Club Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival on January 26-28.

"We currently have seven teams for the social competition and 21 for competitive,” he said.

Team nominations closed on December 31 and any more teams must nominate on the association Facebook site or by calling association president Michael Bourke on 0419120998 as soon as possible.
