Warwick crochet group pulls off first win with 11th tree
A GROUP of eight women who have slowly built up their crocheting skills over 11 years, pulled off a Christmas in July miracle and won the Open Artistic category for their Christmas themed tree.
The deciduous tree outside of Danny Lyons Sports shop went under a woolly makeover from Kylie Brodrick, Brenda Duggan, Margaret Forster, Julie Hauff, Lyn Kelly, Sharon Le Sueur, Sandy McDonnell and Kelly Thompson.
It was transformed into a festive pine, complete with a star topper, Christmas carol tunes and presents for those who made it onto the nice list.
The crafty women nominated their very own, Kelly Thompson on Santa's nice list for her tireless efforts and leadership over the years.
Mrs Thompson works with tremendous skill, proficiency and speed said Lyn Kelly, while the rest of them try to keep up.
"If we we're given a report card it would say, "needs greater commitment”, Mrs Kelly said.
"It takes the entire group to make up what Kelly does.”
Saturday's winning announcement left Mrs Thompson overwhelmed with joy.
"It was amazing, it was a great to get our first win,” she said.
This year's tree was one of the groups most ambitious attempts, which had them start work in September.
"There was a lot more crochet work incorporated this year's tree, so we had to start earlier than usual,” Mrs Thompson said.
"The tree has come out looking a lot better than I imagined.”
