Warwick cyclists riding on a high to state success
CYCLING: Two Warwick cyclists will represent Queensland in the nationals in March after winning medals in the Queensland championships on the new Anna Meares Velodrome at Chandler.
John Eder put age to the side to finish second in the elite sprint and Ethan Sloss won his first state medal when he secured bronze
in the under-19 1km time trial.
Both are coached by Tony Simonelli at the Warwick Velodrome.
Eder, 45, qualified third for the elite sprint at the state championships and won the quarter-final two races to nil.
He then scored a 2-1 race victory against a 22-year-old in the semi final.
He lost the gold medal sprint 2-0 to Toowoomba rider Nathan Graves, a cyclist 10 years his junior.
Eder was sixth in the time trial and unplaced in the kerin at elite level.
Sloss has trained seriously for only the past year and wants to become a professional cyclist.
He won bronze in the 1km time trial at Chandler and finished fourth in the sprint and qualified eighth in the 3km individual pursuit.
Sloss has predominately been training on the road but met Simonelli at a road cycling event when he was offered the chance to train on the track.
"We had two weeks of preparation for the track championships at Chandler; most of my serious training was on the road,” Sloss said.
"I did the twilight criterium series in Toowoomba at the end of last year and came fourth in B grade,” he said.
Sloss has been named in the Queensland under-19 team for the nationals at Chandler in March.
Eder will again represent the Maroons in the masters nationals in Sydney after winning a world championship gold medal in the 750m time trial last year.
Simonelli is also set to compete in the masters in Sydney in March.
