Warwick donates to Cameroon cricket development

ANOTHER major positive out of the weekend's friendly basketball games at WIRAC was the addition of welcome funds for sport in Cameroon.

More than $550 was raised through gold coin entry fees to the games and the money will go to help cricket flourish in the west African nation.

Cameroon Commonwealth Games team chef de mission Victor Agbor Nso is also the president and founder of the Cameroon Cricket Federation.

Nso's dream is to expand the profile of cricket in his country and was doing this from a grassroots level.

Mr Nso said cricket was not big in his French-speaking country.

"But I am trying to make it big,” he said.

"We have 12 senior teams in Cameroon now and the sport is beginning to be played in our school and towns around the country.

"There is also a intensive schools development program under way, introducing the young children of Cameroon to cricket.

"It's going to take some time to make it a huge sport but this very generous donation will go towards allowing us to buy some much-needed gear.”

Nso said he was hoping he could head back to Cameroon with protective gear and coloured accessories to differentiate between teams.

He said he had discovered a range of different sports when he attended a youth development forum in Scotland.

"I had the chance to travel to Edinburgh and learn about many different options I could take home with me,” he said.

"I loved the way cricket was played and knew it would do well back home.

"It took a little while, but now we have many children, men and women playing the game and it's growing quickly.”

Through the tireless efforts of Nso, Cameroon is now as associate member of the International Cricket Council after being an affiliate member since 2007. Women's cricket has been an integral part of Cameroon's cricket development since 2005.
